The Union Home Ministry on September 25, 2025, canceled the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act registration of Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an organisation founded by Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. This decision follows alleged violations including financial irregularities such as the disputed deposit of ₹3.5 lakh from the sale of an old bus purchased with FCRA funds. The Ministry found the explanation insufficient, classifying the amount as foreign contribution linked to Wangchuk, and flagged other discrepancies including foreign fund transfers considered against national interest. The cancellation occurred a day after violent protests erupted in Leh demanding Statehood and tribal status for Ladakh, which resulted in four deaths and multiple injuries. The Ministry blamed Wangchuk’s ‘provocative statements’ for inciting the violence.
Sonam Wangchuk responded, saying he is no longer involved in SECMOL’s management and called the ₹3.5 lakh allegation baseless, explaining that the amount was the proceeds from selling an old bus, which he refused to reclaim after donating ₹17 lakh for a new bus. He expressed that he is being penalised unfairly for refusing to take a loan from the school, which focuses on educating underprivileged children. To know more in detail watch the video.
