UGC’s new equity rules have now pushed BJP leader and former MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh into open rebellion, as he releases a video from his village asking the Modi government with folded hands to roll back what he calls a law that will “divide society” instead of uniting it. Pointing to children from savarna, OBC and Dalit families playing together without asking anyone’s caste, he argues that real social harmony is built by tradition in villages, not by “office-made” regulations, and warns of an agitation if the UGC Rules 2026 are not withdrawn. His elder son, Gonda MLA Prateek Bhushan Singh, has already attacked the UGC regulation as a double-standard that could disturb social balance, while MP Karan Bhushan Singh has issued a long clarification that the parliamentary standing committee he sits on did not frame these rules, demanded a review, and said universities must not become centres of caste conflict, echoing discomfort voiced by senior BJP leader Kalraj Mishra and upper-caste groups protesting across UP.
