West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced she will contest the upcoming assembly elections from her sitting constituency of Bhabanipur, setting up a direct clash with BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. The BJP leader, who defeated Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021 by approximately 1,900 votes, will now contest from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram. In 2021, Banerjee had chosen to fight only from Nandigram against Adhikari but lost. She subsequently won a by-election from Bhabanipur with a margin of 52,000 votes, marking her fourth victory from that seat. In a significant political move, the Trinamool Congress has inducted Pabitra Kar, a close aide of Adhikari who handled organisational work in Nandigram, into the party. Kar will now contest against Adhikari from Nandigram. The TMC has announced candidates for 291 of the 294 assembly seats, leaving three seats in the Darjeeling Hills for ally BGPM. Political analysts suggest Adhikari faces a challenging task managing campaigns across both constituencies simultaneously.
