#rajdhani Is Bihar’s liquor prohibition policy heading for a rethink?
Nearly a decade after Nitish Kumar introduced prohibition in Bihar, questions are once again being raised over its effectiveness, revenue impact and implementation. A recent research paper by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) has reignited the debate, arguing that prohibition has not significantly reduced crimes against women while costing the Bihar government substantial revenue.
The political contradiction is also striking. Samrat Choudhary, who once criticised the government over alleged illegal liquor home deliveries, now maintains that Nitish Kumar’s prohibition policy will not be reversed. But with Bihar facing financial pressures and reports of liquor being widely available despite the ban, could the government eventually consider a gradual change?
