Following catastrophic flash floods triggered along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors in Nepal, search and rescue operations are underway across severely affected districts such as Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Over 600 people have died, while more than 2,500 remain missing, including over 300 Indian nationals. Meanwhile, 21 Indian pilgrims from Tamil Nadu safely returned to Delhi, and 63 Indian workers at the Trishuli Hydro Power Project were rescued. The Nepalese government has permitted foreign rescue teams from India, South Korea, China, and Australia to assist in operations. A specialized rescue team led by Silkyara tunnel expert Arnold Dix has arrived in Nepal to free trapped workers from underground hydropower tunnels. Operations face severe challenges, including damaged infrastructure, heavy debris, and a fresh flood alert issued following warnings of glacial lake formation upstream in Tibet. Questions have also emerged regarding China’s massive infrastructure construction in ecologically fragile Himalayan zones and its failure to provide timely early warnings.
