Nepal is witnessing one of the most devastating flood disasters, leaving thousands of families searching for their missing loved ones. With many bodies still unidentified or untraced, some families are now being forced to perform symbolic last rites without seeing the body of the person they lost.
At Kathmandu’s Pashupatinath Temple, families are using effigies made from Kush grass and barley to represent their missing relatives and performing Hindu funeral rituals. The heartbreaking story of 12-year-old Rozel Shrestha, who performed the symbolic last rites of his missing father Krishna Shrestha, reflects the pain of countless families waiting for answers.
Another family performed the symbolic funeral of 35-year-old truck driver Chandra Bahadur Newar, who went missing after the disaster near the Nepal-China border. His wife searched hospitals and morgues across Kathmandu before accepting that he might never return.
Meanwhile, rescue teams continue searching affected areas, particularly around hydropower tunnels, where there is still hope of finding survivors. Nepal has also stepped up its demand for international assistance and climate justice. Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has called on major greenhouse gas emitters, including China, the US and India, to help vulnerable countries deal with disaster-related losses.
Nepal has also sought financial support from the Loss and Damage Fund, while the government estimates that rebuilding after the disaster could cost between $4 billion and $5 billion. Prime Minister Balendra Shah may raise the issue of the devastating floods and climate compensation at the United Nations.
The exact role of climate change in this particular disaster still requires scientific investigation, but Nepal says rapidly changing conditions in the Himalayas and melting glaciers are creating growing risks for the region.
