The Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution strongly objecting to Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam project across the Cauvery river. The Tamil Nadu government urged the central government to withhold all clearances for the project, stating it violates the Cauvery Tribunal Award and Supreme Court judgments. The assembly declared Cauvery a deficit basin, arguing that no new storage projects should be constructed without the consent of all involved states. The resolution aims to protect the interests of Tamil Nadu farmers, who rely on the river’s water. In response, the Karnataka government maintained that the Mekedatu project is a balancing reservoir intended primarily for Bengaluru’s drinking water needs and will not harm Tamil Nadu’s water share. Karnataka representatives expressed readiness for dialogue, emphasizing that the project would benefit both states. The ongoing dispute highlights the renewed tensions over the sharing of Cauvery waters between the two neighboring states.
